Writing on Environment, Sustainability, Climate Change & Politics

 

From dry season which will be earlier and last longer this year in Indonesia, possibly followed by drought later on to ever-sinking Jakarta to fishermen who are now confused about fish’s whereabouts to farmers who now are not so sure about the season changes, and from ever-increasing sea level and pollution in big cities in this part of the world to destruction of forests and mining companies’ tailing problems and  scarcer fresh water, environmental issues are very much part of current Indonesia and affecting us.  As environment is something that very much affects us, we have every reason to pay attention to it, campaign for its protection and raise the issues surrounding it by writing about them.

 

But why writing in English?

 

While authorities and corporations in Indonesia are still trying to sweep environmental problems under the carpet or even deliberately cover them up, they are seen by the global community as existential problems for humanity. A forest destruction in Indonesia, for instance, will affect the whole world, and unified global opinion matters to Indonesia, and influence government’s policies in environment.

 

Thus, the ability to write about environmental problems in English, especially if massively done by those at the grassroots, allows the global world to know the nation’s real and pressing environmental issues, while pushing global actors to intervene for a solution.

OM Institute’s English Writing Workshop returns. This time the workshop will discuss about environment and provide guidance on what environmental issues to write to highlight what has happened in Indonesia before equipping the participants with simple and logical way to write it in English.
